Superstar News

Simon Gotch– Free Agent
WWE released former Vaudvillian and NXT Tag Team Champion Simon Gotch today after reaching a mutual decision.
The WWE has had struggles when calling tag teams up from NXT. The Ascension continues to flop due to a terrible gimmick tweak, so they went a different direction with the Vaudevillians and didn’t change a thing but still, a flop was had. Luckily the American Alpha right the ship somewhat. However, after a backstage brawl with Kalisto, Gotch hasn’t had much, if any, screen time. The writing was probably on the wall for this one. We will see what happens to Aiden English, Gotch’s former partner.

Kurt Angle– WWE Hall of Fame
Kurt Angle stated, “I think it’s safe to say that I will be wrestling back in that WWE ring again,” during an interview with ESPN’s Jonathan Coachman.
There have been rumors about Angle’s return to WWE for what seems like an eternity, and the debate about what capacity in which his return could take has also been a mystery. He is officially a HOFer and that typically spells the end of an in ring career, but Angle doesn’t think so. He conceeded that he would need to earn WWE’s trust before stepping back into the squared circle, but still seemed confident that he would. Angle hasn’t wrestled for the WWE since August 8th, 2006.

Drew McIntyre– NXT
After being spotted in the crowd at NXT Takeover Orlando, Drew McIntyre claimed to have signed with NXT in a WWE.com exclusive video.
McIntyre pulled a Bobby Roode, who did the exact same thing one year ago in Dallas, however he kept his status a mystery. Drew comes right out and announces himself as an NXT Superstar who is coming after the NXT Title. Here’s hoping his trajectory matching that of Roode, who is the current title holder. McIntyre, a former IC Title holder, was once touted in WWE as the “Chosen One” but quickly fell out of favor, finding himself apart of the lowly 3MB. Since his departure in 2014, Drew has found success in TNA, Evolve, and new promotion WCPW. Casual fans may pay him no mind at first, but he will shine in NXT.

Goldberg– Monday Night Raw
Goldberg said that he is “miserable” during his current WWE run.
“I’ll be honest, I’m miserable. I’m absolutely miserable. But my family is having fun, man. And so, every training session, every ART massage that makes me cry, every muay thai session, it’s all worth it, man.” Goldberg seems to be lamenting the work it takes to prepare for his current run and sustain his current physique, not necessarily the work on TV or in the ring. His comments come during an appearance on an episode of E&C’s Pod of Awesomeness. These comments coupled with his current contract being officially out of TV dates would suggest his run will indeed end at Wrestlemania this coming Sunday.

3/29/2017 6:10pm EST

Undertaker– Monday Night Raw
Substantial rumors state the Undertaker needs hip surgery, which would end his in ring career.
Reports state that the Undertaker had a hard time working the Royal Rumble because of his hip issues, which cause him significant pain. This pain apparently also interferes in his day to day life outside of the ring as well. Discussions have been had backstage that this could indeed be Taker’s final Wrestlemania. He will almost certainly need surgery and it is likely keep him out of the ring for good. Having just turned 52, Taker has been the mainstay of WWE programming for nearly 3 decades. It is a shame he will go out against Roman, especially considering his position. While Roman is capable of putting on good matches, he usually needs to be paired with a superstar with great working ability. Undertaker has that, but in his condition, working the match will be difficult. We may see a quick match at Mania, and hopefully Undertaker is allowed to go out with his hand raised.

3/25/2017 12:45pm EST

Shinsuke Nakamura– NXT
WWE today confirmed that Nakamura will be joining NXT’s UK Tour.
There were thoughts of a post mania call up for Shinsuke that were fueled by his absence from the promo poster for NXT’s UK tour in June. WWE posted on their twitter page that Nakamura will indeed be on the tour. This likely counts him out for a quick call up after Wrestlemania 33 but doesn’t make it impossible as the tour does not have too many dates. Source: Twitter

3/20/2017 6:54pm EST

Goldberg– Monday Night Raw
Due to Goldberg’s successful return, the WWE is rumored to be interested in continuing his part-time run after Wrestlemania 33.
Goldberg has received an overwhelming reception in every city he has visited since his return. This has prompted talks to add dates to Goldbergs current run in a similar fashion as Brock. This news also further cements that Goldberg is likely to drop the title to Brock at Wrestlemania 33. If Goldberg signs on for more dates, they will likely be for the big four PPV’s only (Mania, Summerslam, Survivor Series, and Royal Rumble). If he does return, it would be wise to have him off TV for a time after losing to Brock.

3/20/2017 4:25pm EST

Naomi– Smackdown Live!
Naomi’s father posted on twitter that his daughter would return “by Wrestlemania”.
He was responding to a fan question. Daniel Bryan was vague when setting up the women’s title match for Smackdown when he announced it as “every available woman on Smackdown”. The hope may have always been that Naomi would be able to return for the big show. It is possible that Naomi will return and reclaim her title immediately. Source: Twitter

3/19/2017 4:25pm EST

Rob Van Dam– Free Agent
Rob Van Dam hinted on twitter that he may be making a return to the ring in August.
When asked if it was with WWE, Rob responded, “more info soon”. It is entirely possible Rob is looking for another run with WWE, but has yet to finalize a contract. If he does return, it would likely be on a limited basis, a mix between his last stint which saw him work a few months and then rest a few months, and Brock’s current deal which details a certain amount of dates and PPV appearances. 3/17/2017 5:41pm EST

Roman Reigns– Monday Night Raw
There have been rumors of Roman Reigns switching to the Smackdown Live! roster this summer.
Talk of another WWE draft have begun to surface, and it looks like they are aiming for early this summer. The big name on the mill is the big dog himself, Roman Reigns. The move could mean they want to distance Rollins from Roman, but honestly I can’t think of a valid reason to move him to the blue brand. AJ Styles is also rumored to be on the move, as well as the New Day.

3/17/2017 5:31pm EST

Matt Hardy– Free Agent
Matt Hardy filed for a trademark on the “Broken” character.
This is the reason why TNA/Anthem mailed out those cease and desist letters to PPV providers. They believe they had at least some part in the backstage creative process that eventually spawned the Broken gimmick. While the majority, and most prominent, ideas were Hardy’s the environment and stage was still Anthem’s. It does not sound like they are looking for control of the character, rather they don’t think Hardy deserves full ownership. If Hardy concedes and gives them a percentage of the character it could hold up other promotions from using it. For instance, if WWE makes Broken Hardy merchandise, a piece of the proceeds from Hardy’s percentage would go to Anthem. How strange it would be for WWE branded gear to make TNA money. Here is hoping Hardy wins the fight on this one.

3/16/2017 8:15pm EST

Rusev– Monday Night Raw
Rusev underwent shoulder surgery on March 9th. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that he is scheduled to be out of action for around two months, which means he will miss WrestleMania 33 in Orlando.
It seems that he has been in need of the surgery for some time, which is why he put over Big Show and his team with Jinder ended so quickly. This may be a blessing in disguise for Rusev, as he was on the decline story wise for too long. He should be able to return strong, and hopefully as a monster heel. This also means more time for Lana down in NXT to get some in ring experience.

3/16/2017 4:10pm EST

Erick Rowan– Smackdown Live!
Updating a previous item, Erick Rowan has been cleared to return to the ring from his torn rotator cuff, but was not used at this week’s TV tapings.
He was, however, backstage at Smackdown this week, but was not used. It looks like his return will be on the same show as former Wyatt family members Bray and Luke Harper. It is an odd time for him to return as Bray is reigning alone as the champion while Harper has disappeared after a great match with AJ Styles a few weeks ago. The most likely spot for him would be in the Andre the Giant Battle Royal at Wrestlemania.

3/16/2017 4:08pm EST

Cedric Alexander– 205 Live
Cedric Alexander will be out 3-5 months due to an injury to his right knee.
No word on the specifics of his injury, but it is likely and MCL/PCL issue. Cedric was middle of the pack in the cruiser weight division, which is to say not many fans know who he is. 205 Live will go on without him, continuing to struggle to find a viewer base.

3/13/2017 5:38pm EST

Jack Swagger– Free Agent
WWE has released form World Heavyweight Champion Jack Swagger today.
Swagger has been clamoring for his release for weeks due to frustration with his booking. Once a top mid card talent who forayed in the main event scene from time to time, Swagger has fallen completely off the cliff after being a stepping stone for many a Superstar. Swagger will suffer under a 90 day no compete clause before he can officially take any indie dates, but he fully intends to continue his in-ring career elsewhere.

3/13/2017 5:34pm EST

Kurt Angle– WWE Hall of Fame
There is a rumor spreading like wildfire that Kurt Angle will be replacing Mick Foley as Raw General Manager after Wrestlemania 33
We don’t typical post unreliable rumors as news, but this was too big to note. Mick has been rumored to be stepping down for months and his current on-air situation would suggest that it is finally coming to that. Angle would be a smooth transition as he will be involved on TV in the lead up to his induction into the WWE HOF anyways. This would also mean Angle is unlikely to take any indie dates after his induction. While a match as Raw GM wouldn’t be out of the question, it seems unlikely. This may be a compromise between WWE, who is too worried about Angle’s health, and Kurt, who seems very interested in a return and a match, reached to keep Angle on TV. Time will tell.

3/13/2017 5:30pm EST

Asuka– NXT
WWE NXT Women’s Champion Asuka made her main roster live event debut at Sunday’s WWE live event from Madison Square Garden.
She teamed with Becky Lynch, Tamina Snuka, Becky Lynch and Nikki Bella to defeat Carmella, Natalya, Mickie James and SmackDown Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss. Asuka made Carmella tap for the win. Early word is she will continue to tour with the Smackdown Live! live event roster leading up to Wrestlemania. This may mean a TV call out to Smackdown could happen after or before the big show. This could also mean good news for Ember Moon, who is scheduled to face Asuka for the NXT Women’s Championship at NXT Takeover: Orlando the night before Wrestlemania 33.

3/13/2017 5:24pm EST

Finn Balor– Monday Night Raw
Finn Balor will be backstage for tonight’s RAW in Detroit but no word yet on if he will appear on TV.
No word yet if he will actually appear on Raw, but he has been in action during a live event in Buffalo last week. It is an odd time for Finn to return, as there isnt a clear storyline for him to jump into leading up to Wrestlemania. He could be a replacement for Seth Rollins or at least get involved in that feud as he did face off against Triple H, Kevin Owens, and Somoa Joe during his recent live event appearance. Hopefully tonight we get some answers.

3/13/2017 5:19pm EST

Rusev– Monday Night Raw
According to F4WOnline, former United States Champion Rusev is scheduled to be absent for a period of time, and will likely miss Wrestlemania
Rumors are also flying that he is undergoing shoulder surgery. It is a big blow for Rusev who has lost his footing of late. His late “big” angle was with Enzo Amore and Lana, which was awkward and painful to watch. His partnership with Jinder Mahal dissipated and was recently squashed at Fastlane by the Big Show. His time on the shelf could be why Lana has been down in Florida with NXT training and doing live events. Even without the injury, we wouldnt have been surprised if Rusev was not seen on the grandest stage this year.

3/13/2017 2:04am EST

Hideo Itami– NXT
Hideo Itami made his WWE NXT return at tonight’s NXT live event in Orlando, Florida.
The former KENTA beat Riddick Moss, the same man who put him on the shelf due to a botched move, with the GTS. Itami hasn’t been seen on TV since May of 2015 when it looked like he was about to make the jump to the main roster. However, once recuperated from shoulder surgery, he fell victim to a botched powerslam from Moss and found himself in rehab mode again, this time due to neck issues. Hideo has not lived up the incredible hype he had when first debuting on NXT and he has an upward climb as he returns from a 2 year hiatus after the success of fellow transplants Shinsuke Nakamura and Asuka.

3/12/2017 12:11am EST

Erick Rowan– Injured Reserve
PWInsider is reporting that Erick Rowan is scheduled to return to WWE at this week’s television tapings.
Rowan has been out since tearing his rotator cuff in September. No word on which brand he will be appearing on, but our money is on Smackdown Live!, possibly to rejoin Bray Wyatt or to have a program with Luke Harper, who is currently in limbo after losing to AJ Styles in a #1 contenders match a few weeks ago.

3/11/2017 7:25pm EST

Triple H– Monday Night Raw
Triple H made his in ring return last night at a WWE house show in Buffolo NY.
Triple H has been building to a match with Seth Rollins for Wrestlemania 33, Rollin’s injury permitting. In the meantime, he has cultivated a Heyman-esque group of guys that he has propped up as, for lack of a better term, Triple H guys. Last night he joined Kevin Owens and Somoa Joe to take on Sami Zayn, Chris Jericho, and a returning Finn Balor. It remains to be seen if Triple H will continue to work with Balor as Owens and Jericho and Zayn and Joe have already had televised feuds leading into the big show. Balor could be viewed as a fallback option for Hunter if Seth Rollins is not cleared to compete.

3/11/2017 12:25pm EST

Finn Balor– Monday Night Raw
Finn Balor made his in ring return last night at a WWE house show in Buffolo NY.
This is Finn’s first ring action since winning the Universal Championship at Summerslam 2016 due to a shoulder injury. Balor teamed with Sami Zayn and Chris Jericho to take on Triple H, Kevin Owens, and Somoa Joe. No word yet on Balor’s Wrestlemania plans, but it is expected that he works the show. A short fan video of Finn in action can be seen here.

3/11/2017 12:19pm EST

Chris Jericho– Monday Night Raw
Jericho will be talking time off from WWE after Wrestlemania 33.
Chris is taking time off to tour with his band, Fozzy. They will be playing several dates throughout the month of May, which can be seen here. He has already been advertised for WWE live event dates in June, so it appears he will return in time for a Summerslam program. It is likely that his feud with Owens will be one and done at Wrestlemania, however the two have such good chemistry with each other we wouldnt be surprised to see he come back to working with Kevin after the layoff.

3/11/2017 12:10pm EST

John Cena– Smackdown Live!
Deadline reports that John Cena has signed on to co-star in “Daddy’s Home 2,” the sequel to the 2015 movie.
Cena’s slow decent into part time player in the WWE continues. John had a cameo in the original “Daddy’s Home” home movie, but it was short. This time, he is slated to have a much more substantial role. It has become increasingly clear that Cena will be following in the Rock’s footsteps and make the jump to Hollywood. He likely still makes all the big four PPV’s this year but no guarantees on any ongoing programs. It is a shame that now is the time for Cena, as he finally has an influx of good in ring talent to work with and bring something fresh to his video library. After Cena gets #17 we wouldn’t be surprised if he bows out of the ring and becomes a full blown part time player.

3/11/2017 12:01pm EST

Lana– Monday Night Raw
Lana was back at WWE NXT and the WWE Performance Center this week to work on her in-ring skills.
Lana worked a NXT live event as well, defeating Aliyah in Largo FL. It seems like every few months we get rumblings of Lana actually putting in some ring work, but this is the most substantial bit we have seen since Rusev got the call to Raw. Lana has seemingly attracted a lot of backstage heat, and it wouldnt be surprising if that was a major factor in her not growing from Rusev’s escort/manager. It will be interesting to see if she continues to work live events down in Florida. If she finally makes the jump to the ring on TV, she likely bypasses NXT for Raw.

3/11/2017 11:50am EST

Matt Hardy– Free Agent
Matt Hardy remains vague on his future plans.
Hardy has done a lot of work interviews since his contract with TNA ended at the end of February. Hardy said that “anything is possible” when asked if they would be at WrestleMania on April 2nd. He also said that he has had conversations “with every promoter with every major wrestling organization across the world”. Hardy is also facing a legal battle with TNA about the Broken character, as well as Jeff Hardy’s Brother Nero. Their recent appearance at ROH’s 15th Anniversary PPV was without music and as Matt and Jeff, albeit still playing the Broken parts more or less. Matt and Jeff retained the ROH Tag Titles at the event, defeating the Young Bucks and RPG Vice. In all likelihood, Hardy and his brother keep picking up indie dates until they regain the rights to the Broken gimmick. Considering he created, wrote, and booked the character on TNA, he deserves to continue to use it.

3/11/2017 11:43am EST

Daniel Bryan– Smackdown Live!
Daniel Bryan is shooting for an in-ring return once his WWE contract expires.
His contract is currently set to expire early next year. Dave Meltzer notes that Bryan is hoping to wrestle for CMLL. Bryan clearly has not given up on living out his dream and it seems likely WWE will lose him if they do not clear him to compete. It remains highly unlikely that they will. Bryan stated that he has a new low risk, yet still interesting, in-ring style to unveil when he finally gets the chance. Daniel Bryan has not wrestled since April 14th, 2015.
